Red News - The Future

It has been a horrible, gut wrenching, soul searching few weeks for all of us.

As individuals we have been forced to think the unthinkable - to reassess whether and how we will continue to support Manchester United in its present form, the club around which our lives have revolved for as long as we can remember. We resent the situation we have been forced into, we want nothing more than to enjoy our football, but we cannot hide from the reality. Some readers of Red News have, rightly, asked us to state our position, and to outline the future of Red News in this strange new world.

Thousands of United supporters have searched their consciences. Some have decided to stay away from Old Trafford until Glazer has gone; others will continue to attend games, whilst denying the owners any additional expenditure - on merchandise, catering etc. Others will renew season tickets, but will refuse to pay additional sums on cup matches. These are tough individual decisions. They do not only affect the supporters making those decisions - they affect their families, their children - the next generation of United supporters. No two sets of circumstances are totally identical - some fans have been to every match for 40 years, others are younger; some go home and away, some follow the team in Europe; some have season tickets, others buy match tickets; some collect the programme, others never touch it; some have a few shares, others have significant sums tied up in the club. There are so many variables, so many permutations on decisions, and on possible actions.

That is why we, as Reds, should respect the decisions of our comrades. No decision has been taken lightly. Red News remains committed to the belief that whatever personal choices you have made, those are the right choices for you. We recognise too that supporters have the right to change their minds, to take further action - perhaps to cancel their season tickets at some later point - as circumstances change, perhaps, for example, if the name of Old Trafford itself is changed to satisfy the demands of the creditors who will now encircle our club.

The fight for the future of our club is one that must be fought on many fronts, and it is imperative that we now stand United in our singular aim and objective of seeing the end of Glazer's control of United. We can, and we must, all work together to achieve it.

Inevitably, there have been disagreements. Different circumstances breed different standpoints. But the differences are around the reaction - there is no difference in the revulsion we feel at the recent turn of events. We believe that any divisions between United supporters would only benefit the enemy. Whatever our views on the best course of action, we should agree to focus on the end result, and on that which unites us all.

On this, all of us at Red News stand United together.

But what of the future of Red News?

Red News exists to give a voice to United fans. We have a right, as fans, to that voice. We will not be silenced by recent events. Red News will go on. Red News will continue to be available outside Old Trafford.

This isn't because of financial considerations and self interest - anyone who knows our financial situation will know why we do this, and it isn't for the money. We firmly believe that the folding of Red News, or any of the fanzines for that matter, would be music to the ears of the Bearded Gimp. We have a right to exist, we will not be driven away.

At this point in time Red News has contact with United only through the Communications Department of the club, and with the playing staff. All levels of communication with the executive of the club have ceased. It is only the Football Club that we support, not the money men who so shamelessly ditched the words 'Football Club' from our badge, and those who control and exploit United for their own personal greed.

Some of you may not know what to do next, wondering what one person can achieve. But already the actions of the Not For Sale coalition have had an impact. The actions of individual United fans do add up. We can create an unstoppable ripple as good forces combine. Together we are a strong voice. Everyone has a part to play, however large or small. Remember that our cause is just.

We intend that Red News will continue to stay loyal to its tradition, mixing humour and gravity as we have done for the past 18 years. We will inform and give voice to all loyal fans, and we will try to educate those who for now don't care. Because we believe that deep down they DO care, perhaps afraid that they have been propelled into something they didn't want - just like the rest of us. All the time Red News will try to stand up for decent, honest United fans who have been thrust into this nightmare.

We will support initiatives that will plan for the day when Glazer is gone. Sooner or later he will no longer control United, and it is imperative that strategies are in place so that we are not outsiders, unable to control our own destiny and the destiny of our beloved United. Long term plans are as vital as short term actions.

Red News backs the legal methods being used against Glazer's control. As has been said elsewhere, look at what you yourself can do. Every little helps. In the coming weeks and months we hope that Red News will be a voice for YOU, remaining 100% independent, unofficial and available for United fans wherever they may be to share opinion and provide the voice that Glazer does not want to hear.

This is OUR club, not HIS. In fact, we are the club. There may be different views on the paths we have taken these past few weeks but now is the time to look forward. Whatever your standpoint, stand United with each and every supporter who is opposed to Glazer, because he has shown scant regard for the well-being of our football club and its traditions. As we wrote a few weeks ago:

"United has arisen from the ashes before, and through the devotion of its supporters, in their various ways, will do so again. We'll never die. We look forward to the day when the flag of liberation is flown over Old Trafford once again, with the words Manchester United Football Club restored to the colours."

There will be many more twists and turns in this, and it may be a long battle, but United will be free.
